The Basketball Podcast: EP46 Igor Miličić on Underdog Tactics

RELEASE DATE : 19/06/2019

In this week’s basketball coaching conversation, Basketball Champions League head coach Igor Miličić joins the podcast to discuss creative coaching. Coach Miličić is head coach of Polish League team Anwil Włocławek. His team competes with “underdog tactics” against much higher budgeted teams. On the podcast, he explains ideas to give your team the best chance to succeed.

Miličić has coached professionally in Poland for Anwil, and AZS Koszalin. He is a rising star in European coaching. The Croatian has considerable high level playing experience having a long successful playing career in Europe. All these experiences have shaped his coaching ideas. Using full-court pressure defense, 1-3-1 zone defense and other techniques to compete against some of the best teams in Europe provide us a blueprint to apply creative coaching ideas.

Igor Miličić Quotes:

“We have more control as coaches on the defensive side than on the offensive side.”

“If you are playing against one defense, you can easily adapt . . why not make this tougher for the point guard and the coaches?”

“It’s very challenging to train the players in order to be able to go from one defense to another . . as it’s tough for us to practice, it’s very challenging for other teams to adapt.”

“Usually we are trying to feel how a team responds to a zone press after a free throw . . if they give us an opportunity to steal the ball we go for it but we want to steal time.”

“We are stealing time from opponents [so they have] less time to attack us.”

“Usually what point guards want to do is they want to score or have assists . . so they want to hold the ball. Within that defense [1-3-1 zone] they are not able to get to the paint and they are not able to do what they want to do.”

“You have to have rules for each situation [on defense] . . then when you put on the film after the game you don’t have to talk. The players are saying, ‘That’s my mistake . . I didn’t do that.’ . . And it’s a clear situation.”

“I’m trying to find the sets that can work against different defenses that we will face . .”

“When we are playing defense with a hard show, we are as good as the last guy on defense in the corner opposite the ball . . so whatever we practice tactically is 5-on-5.”

“We are making an analysis of our team defense and individual defense . . whenever we were under 38% we are winning games.”

“We go into the scouting the last three or four games of the teams we are playing . . we are finding the common basis for the next two games . . we are finding the common ground on those two teams how they attack and how they defend.”
